With a love of sports ranging from golf to baseball to hunting, Mr. Garcia’s favorite professional football team is the Chicago Bears.
The National Football League (NFL) announced veteran guard Kyle Long as the Chicago Bears’ Ed Block Courage Award recipient. In a ceremony held at Manzo’s Banquets in Des Plaines, Illinois, the Maryville Academy honored Long with the prestigious award on Tuesday, April 3, 2018.
The award recognizes the player from each of the 32 NFL teams who best promotes sportsmanship and courage. Chosen by the votes of their teammates, Ed Block Courage Award recipients embody professionalism, strength, and dedication both on the field and as role models within the community.
Having battled injuries throughout the 2017 season, it was Kyle’s determination, heart, and grit that helped the son of NFL Hall of Famer Howie Long to overcome those obstacles and receive the Ed Block Courage Award. The honorary luncheon also recognizes the late Ed McCaskey, who not only served as the vice-president, treasurer, and chairman of the Chicago Bears, but was a large supporter of the Maryville community.
From donations raised in McCaskey’s name, the Ed Block Courage Award luncheon contributes to high school, vocational, and college scholarships to help children in the Maryville community. With 23 NFL team-sponsored Courage Houses in place to assist children in distress, this year’s banquet marks the 39th annual Ed Block Courage Award presentation.
